    H. Lawrence in The Snake. Good poems often appear deceptively simple, masking the many hours of hard work that go into their creation. Because poetry often relies on a feeling – a moment of emotion – it is a good idea to carry a small notepad with you if you want to write poetry so that you can jot down any scene, situation, experience or feeling which has heightened meaning for you and might later make a poem, just as an artist draws a brief sketch of a scene to reproduce in greater detail on canvas later.

    All colleges of further education offer day and evening classes in English language, as do distance-learning courses (for example, the Open University). You don’t have to wait until you’ve finished the course to begin writing; you can hone your skills while you are writing your story. Reading I can’t emphasize enough the importance of reading, especially the genre in which you wish to write. Not only will reading improve your sentence structure, vocabulary, spelling and language skills, it will also show you what makes a good book – its structure, layout and pacing.

    Remember the settings. Describe them, and also anything significant or especially poignant in what you could see, hear, smell, taste or touch. Describe what was going through your mind. Be there and relive it, painful though this may be. Your strength lies in knowing your story inside out and better than anyone else. It may be very upsetting, even traumatic, for you to go back and relive your past if you have suffered, so make sure you are ready to write your story. If you are not then postpone the project until you feel the time is right.
