In the 1920s football was played much differently than it is today. Players wore leather helmets without face masks. The football was rounder, and the center often snapped the ball not to the quarterback, but to a halfback. Few teams passed the ball more than a handful of times each game. Rules prevented teams from making many substitutions, so most players in college football played both offense and defense, often staying on the field for the entire game. When the California Golden Bears were on offense, Roy Riegels played center, snapping the ball to one of the backs to start every play and then blocking.
